Summary
In this article, it is mentioned that a cake shop owner named Jack Phillips stated that he was practicing his religious beliefs when turning down the opportunity to make a cake for a same-sex married couple. According to the artist, making the cake would have meant him going against his religious values by supporting the same-sex marriage. Although the cake artist seemed to have won the case with the supreme court, we see that there have been efforts made from the state of Colorado to try and help fight for the rights of the same-sex couple who requested the wedding cake. Questions are now raised as to whether the actions of the State are considered signs of bullying the baker's religious beliefs, or if this is to be considered the best plan of action in supporting the same-sex couple. The court continues with its proceedings.
Analysis
I see it as though being a Christian would mean that our faith has taught us that marriage happens by being with the opposite gender. However, we, as Christians, should have been taught to love one another no matter his or her situation, or circumstance, or belief. From what I've learned, God has given us free will (this, too, has its opposing arguments), which has allowed us to make decisions according to personal preferences. Yes, rules and regulations exist within spirituality and religion, but I feel that the most important rule is to welcome those different from us with open arms and to help others without hesitation if I am capable of doing so. This effects me as a student in high school because the more I learn about controversial topics, the more I must learn to recognize and aim to understand decision making from both parties. I believe this will help me when it comes to decision making. Humans, in my opinion, can easily place blame or consider one's beliefs to be more correct than others, and from there a compromise should be made in order to fit most if not all needs. I know that many people exist on polar ends of the political and religious spectrum who will not change their decision regarding their choices and beliefs, but I also know that things are changing, and more people are willing to allow these changes to flourish within society. This article is in relation to the supreme court and the public policy in the state of Colorado because one power allowed for the baker's victory in the Supreme court, but the power in the state of Colorado is being used to support the couple in the preparation of their matrimonious celebration.
